The 2023 Halberg Games is a national three-day sports festival for physically disabled young people at King's College in Auckland from 14-16 April.
Hosted by the Halberg Foundation - the charity set up by Olympic running legend Sir Murray Halberg ONZ MBE – the Games is open to physically disabled and visually impaired athletes aged eight to 21 years. Athletes compete for their regions and can choose from more than 20 sports and activities on offer over the weekend including; swimming, golf, athletics, wheelchair rugby, football, rowing, table tennis, archery, taekwondo and cross fit.
An opening ceremony will kick-start the festivities on Friday 14 April. The launch celebration will feature a parade of the athletes in their regional teams, lighting of the official Halberg Games' flame, reading of the 'Athlete’s Oath' and guest speakers.
The festival-style event is unique to New Zealand providing an opportunity for athletes to connect, compete and pursue further opportunities in sports.
About the Halberg Foundation
The Halberg Foundation is a charity which aims to enhance the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation. Founded by the late Sir Murray Halberg ONZ MBE in 1963, the core work of Halberg Foundation includes a team of Advisers around the country who connect physically disabled young people to sport and recreation opportunities. The Advisers also deliver an Inclusion Training course on adapting physical activity and assist clubs, schools and organisations to provide inclusive events and programmes.
