Eleven days of competition ended with the New Zealand Paralympic Team achieving a medal tally of nine that equals our performance at Heidelberg in 1972 and slightly surpasses the total in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1968 when the team secured four medals, including one gold.

Nine medals may be a disappointing tally, but the individual performances of many of our Paralympians were remarkable. A new stable of athletes will become household names, if they aren't already, for anyone who follows Paralympics. Names like William Stedman, Holly Robinson, Anna Grimaldi, Peter Cowan, Neelan O’Neill and Matthew Britz.Â
We can take a lot of positives out of these Paralympic Games and it will be interesting to see who will be nominated and win the "Para Athlete / Para Team of the Year" category at next year's Halberg Awards.
