In just under two weeks New Zealand, along with Australia will co-host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
In what must be a first for a sports event (excluding the Paralympic Games) FIFA, International Federation of Association Football, has gone to extreme efforts to make sure that people with disabilities can attend and enjoy the month long tournament. Some of these efforts include:
a dedicated ticket purchase process for disabled patrons;
mobility parking on a first come first get basis in New Zealand (you must have a valid mobility parking permit) and Australians will have a booking system; and
areas for people in wheelchairs, manual and power and mobility scooters.
In addition, 40 matches will offer an audio descriptive commentary service for blind and partially-sighted fans - this service will be a first for football in New Zealand and Australia.
Full details of accessibility at all venues including information about companions with disabled supporters and assistance dogs can be found on the FIFA Women’s World Cup website www.fifa.com/fifawomwnsworldcup2023.
